How To Install The Google Assistant Skill For Alexa (Summer 2018)

YouTube player
This skill enables Alexa to perform searches using the Google Search engine instead of Bing. It also provides full Google assistant functionality via your Amazon Echo as if you were speaking to Google Home.

This how to video tutorial to guide you through the process of installing the unofficial Google Assistant Skill for Alexa, it will take you through the process step by step in typical Paul Hibbert fashion.

The Google Assistant Skill was created by the Amazing Ross (Tartan Guru) all credit to him, see the bottom of this description for ways to say thank you.

If you have installed the Google Assistant skill previously then there is no need to follow this tutorial! The tutorial has been re-created because Amazon changed their interface so much that it ruined my previous tutorials.

The skill will default to US English and the Google Assistant will think you live in either West Virginia or Dublin depending on which AWS region you used

To change the language to another language and set your location you will need to have the very latest version of Google Assistant installed on your iOS or Android phone.

Using the Google Assistant App on your phone/tablet follow these instructions to set the language to German (the skill will be listed as “Alexa Assistant v1” in the devices section of settings):

developers.google.com/assistant/sdk/guides/assistant-settings

You will probably want to turn on the personal results option in the Assistant App as well

Is a £160 phone better than an S7 edge?

I spent 2 weeks with the indestructible E&L W9 to find out if having a top end phone is really worth it.

Can I survive 2 weeks with a £160 phone with my beloved s7 edge sat in a drawer?

Vobot Alexa powered Clock review and unboxing

YouTube player
An unboxing and review of the Alexa powered Vobot Alarm clock.

At time of writing the app is buggy and doesn’t give you a wifi password screen to sync it to your wifi network and unfortunately for me I tried everything, including using a browser on my laptop before finally returning to my Android and using the browser there.

If you can’t connect Vobot to your Wifi network then do the following…
Power up the Vobot until it is fully booted
Open Google Chrome on your android device and visit myvobot.com.
Follow the instructions the same as you did in the app.
This time it will work instead of making you want to launch it into space.

Google Home skill for Alexa

YouTube player
About:
This is a tutorial on how to create the Alexa Google home skill from github.com/tartanguru/alexa-assistant

Easily the best skill yet!
—————————————————–
What can’t it do?:
Alarms and timers. Use Alexa for these.
Device location. If you have a Home address set in your google account then it will use that as a default
Playing music, news, or podcasts is not supported.
Account linking for third party services requires owning a Google Home and installing the Google Home application. This affects using services like Uber, or connecting to home automation devices like Hue.
Multiple Users are not supported – it will only use the Google account linked through the Alexa app
Asking Google Assistant to change volume. You will need to ask Alexa directly.
—————————————————–

Does it cost anything?:
This skill uses chargable services on Amazon Web Services – although these should be free for the first 12 months of use if you are a new user of AWS. Otherwise the costs will be approx $5.20 per year based upon 1000 calls to the skill a month.
—————————————————–

Privacy:
You will need to give Google Assistant access to the following features on your Google account. If you do not give access to these then the skill will not work (This is a Google policy not mine). If you are concerned about privacy, then you could use a new google account just for this skill and not login using this account elsewhere

Web & App Activity
Location History
Device Information
Voice & Audio Activity
—————————————————–

A note about shopping lists:

Shopping lists are supported – you will need to use the Google Express app to see them, or if you are not in the US or don’t want to use the app then you can access the shopping list here: – www.google.com/express/shoppinglist/
