Your Window Blinds Are Dumb. Make Them Smart In 10 minutes

This video is a review and tutorial for the Soma Smart Shades solar powered motor for Alexa and Apple Home kit. You can install it in under 10 minutes and it will work with any pulley blind including light curtains, roller blinds, roman blinds, venetian blinds and wooden blinds.

I’ve achieved this with my Amazon Echo Dot by installing the Soma Connect skill via the Alexa app and by using the additional Soma Connect hardware.

Xiaomi VS Samsung: 9 Reasons I’m Done With Samsung Phones

Since 2012 I’ve only ever used Samsung Smart phones, so why am I switching to a £217 Xiaomi A2 phone from China?

In this video I pit 2 phones against each other: Xiaomi A2 versus S7 edge. The S7 edge still retails at £375 for a new phone (non-refurbished), the A2 is currently £217 at time of writing and beats the S7 edge in almost every category.

I review the features of both the S7 edge and Xiaomi A2 and prove once and for all that we’re paying for a brand name not a phone. Goodbye Samsung.

Broadlink Alternative: Energenie Mi Home

The Broadlink RF functionality is STILL not working in the EU for Alexa or Google Home, so I’ve been on the hunt for Smart Home Broadlink alternatives until a fix for RF finally gives the EU back full functionality of RF plug sockets and RF light switches. If you’re looking for a Broadlink alternative then I may just have found something special. Question is, is it any good?

For under £90 the Energenie Mi home starter packs give you a smart home hub, 3 plug sockets, a light switch and a wireless ‘click’ switch. Energenie’s Mi home products are compatible with Alexa, Google Home and IFTTT, so it’s high time I checked out the Energenie Smart Home Starter bundle.

Please note:

1. Infrared versus RF: Energenie doesn’t have the full functionality of the RM pro, it can’t control Infrared products, it isn’t a like for like alternative. If you’re looking for Infrared alternatives then hit me up on social media and I’ll give you my recommendations 😊

2. Can this control my existing RF stuff?: No, sadly not it’s all proprietary stuff, but a pack of 3 sockets is £25 so it’s still a really affordable replacement. I suppose it depends how much RF stuff you’ve got already but if you have a lot then there’s also this Sonoff product which controls most of my stuff (I couldn’t get it to learn my home easy light switches), but it will control most RF stuff… amzn.to/2QuCDNJ

3. Compatability: Energenie has 2 generations of smart home products. The first generation products are not controllable by the 2nd gen hub and vice versa, don’t accidentally buy 1st gen products for a 2nd gen hub!

4. Availability: Unfortunately Energenie aren’t widely available outside of the UK yet, though some products are for sale in other countries you will likely require an adaptor for your region.

How Broadlink Were Almost Ruined

This video breaks down all the current issues with setting up the Broadlink RM pro and RM mini 3 in the EU and contains some Big News for EVERYBODY! This video also explains why you can’t control RF using the UK Alexa Skill / EU Alexa Skill, and Why the Broadlink RM Pro and Broadlink RM Mini 3 won’t work with Google Home for those regions. There are some workarounds for how to fix issues with the Broadlink RM pro and RM mini 3 in the mean-time and some official time scales from Broadlink themselves for fixes.
