Google has decided to give Nest a slow death instead of just outright killing it off in August like they originally planned. What does that mean for Alexa and her ability to control Nest now?? Well for one thing this new twist means that you can keep your existing IFTTT recipes and external automations as long as you DON’T accidentally “upgrade” to the new Google account. You will need to keep your Nest account open, BUT you can’t create new recipes or automations as of August 31st, you will only be able to use your old ones. So when ANY of your Smart Home hardware inevitably dies (Door sensors, motion sensors, hubs etc) and you have to replace it then your Nest connection is broken forever. Why am I still not happy? Because I flipping paid for IFTTT when I bought the device! I wasn’t told I was renting the connection to IFTTT and Philips Hue and Yonomi until Google tired of maintaining the API. But Google’s new API is available why don’t IFTTT and all the others just get on board? The reason is simple: Google’s API allows you to send requests to Nest but not have Nest send requests out, so I could create a recipe that changes the temperature, but not have any automation should temperature change, the same is true of all Nest products as of August; I can tell my Camera to start filming, but I can’t have a motion event trigger a task. Googles new API is half the functionality even IF everyone got on board, which is probably why they aren’t bothering. Will Alexa work? They’re saying it will whilst simultaneously telling us they’re “Working with Amazon”. Why is that present tense? Why is it not “We worked with Amazon”? I’ve heard several people saying that Google are only doing what Amazon did with Ring. Let me be clear I have no trust or love for either company when it comes to them screwing each other over, BUT; there is a world of difference between witholding a product from your competition from the outset and withdrawing a product from a platform of 30 existing partners. I paid for a product that had integration and as of August I no longer own that product. I’ve been electronically robbed. If you’re a Nest fanboy telling me “that’s progress, get over it” then you’re part of the problem, how is halving the fucntionality progress? Why not just secure the existing platform, or amalgamate the two? It’s because this isn’t about what they say it’s about, it’s a brand thing and a giant intentional step away from playing nicely with others. One day it may be a service that you’ve paid for that Google snatch out from under you in the name of progress or privacy or security and you’ll be glad there’s someone like me screaming bloody murder on your behalf. Nest will no longer work with IFTTT as of August, but what about Alexa!? Google bought Nest back in 2014, but has just made the rather frightening announcement that it is suddenly concerned about everyone’s privacy and is henceforth dropping it’s “works with Nest” program like a hot brick. (I always knew my thermostat was up to no good) The first casualty is massive enough on it’s own; It’s IFTTT and I am livid, but there are far greater concerns about Amazon Alexa and in fact the Smart Home industry as a whole. 3rd party control is about to go out the window: If you bought a Nest specifically because you wanted to be able to control a Thermostat using 3rd party smart home gear then your time may well be up unless your 3rd party company (Philips Hue, LIFX, Wemo, Harmony, LightwaveRF, and Yes; Alexa) decides to spend the time and money not only developing for Google’s new platform but also passing a new series of tests. Homey have already emailed their customers to say they’re not going to jump through these hoops and as of the end of August Homey will no longer be able to control the Nest thermostat, and I imagine it’s because Google have made it clear they don’t want them to. You can expect a slew of these types of emails over the coming months because Google is closing ranks and tying you into their eco system. I am 99% confident You’re about to witness the birth of a new Apple. You can check the list of current “works with Nest partners” that could be affected here, and it is not a small group!: workswith.nest.com/uk/ Alexa as far as I can tell uses the same connection as any other partner and is a direct competitor to Google, so isn’t the writing kind of already on the wall? If you’re not sure, then here’s some food for thought… Google is re-branding all of it’s smart home stuff to “Nest”: The Google Hub is now known as the “Nest hub” which is exceptionally worrying… Google and Amazon do not like you using their products to control their competitors gadgets. If they’re re-branding their smart home line to “Nest” then it spells out the future for Nest products pretty clearly. In my opinion it is just a matter of time before you won’t be able to control any Nest products with Alexa, and that includes the thermostat you already bought. Time might prove me wrong, but I think you’re going to see an announcement pretty soon that mirrors the one that just went out about IFTTT and Homey. In the quest for the all in one smart home device I have been sent a Homey hub which boasts every available smart home transmitter I can think of. The Homey hub has Zigbee, Zwave, RF, Wifi, Bluetooth, and Infrared all in one hub and can even control Philips Hue products without a Hue hub!! Can I finally throw away all my other Smart Home hubs? I sat down to lunch with Broadlink in London to discuss their upcoming new app and products and hopefully not get punched in the face for my previous videos, spoiler alert: I’m still just as pretty as I was before. I got my hands on the tiny new RM Blackbean mini (The RM4 mini), We discussed their new Broadlink RM pro (The RM4 pro), I took away one of their new Smart bulbs (the Broadlink SB1) and we’ve been chatting since about their upcoming dimmable plug socket (The SP4). This video is a breakdown of what is to come, but following this video there will be more indepth reviews of all of these products including their upcoming zero-configuration (Fastcon) technology and “NoApp” solutions which will work directly with Alexa and Google Home without any need for the Broadlink app at all! Speaking of apps, there is a new one on the way and this video will give you a sneak preview in advance of beta testing. Details of how to join the beta test for the new Broadlink app will be available in an upcoming video. Imagine all your smart home devices all in one smart home app? Now imagine if it didn’t even need an Internet connection! This Smart home hub is seriously the best hub I’ve seen for amalgamating all smart home devices in one place for dashboards and touch panels, but also for Alexa and Google Home integration. I’ve managed to import my Philips Hue, my Ikea products, my Xiaomi Aqara products, and my cheap Chinese Zigbee 3.0 and Z-wave stuff, and I can control it all locally without the Internet! For anything that can’t be controlled natively there is a community creating drivers to make your stuff work, and worst comes to worst there’s always IFTTT. I am yet to find something I can’t connect to it one way or another! I now have just one Alexa Smart Home skill because any device that is controlled by Hubitat can be advertised to Alexa, Google Home and IFTTT… Or not if you want to keep them off the Internet, you literally tick the ones you want to advertise and it’s that simple. The versatility and configurability is endless, it can be as private or as public as you like. This is basically Home Assistant for dummies, and Smart things for nerds.
